It Follows a Pattern

This continues Abraham’s quiet observation. It follows the December 2025 letter, “Final Resonance on Christmas Eve.” If that one passed you by, the full piece waits in the Journal on the site.

These events do not happen in isolation.

It Follows a Pattern

Abraham Cole sat in his apartment in San Francisco’s Mission District while rain beat against the window. On his screen he was watching the fresh footage that had just come out. A shooting had occurred at a major public event. Chaos broke out for a short time and the live broadcast carried the fear and anger across the country in waves. No one died, but the disturbance spread quickly.

He leaned back slightly and let the clip run again without touching the controls. Leo Tanner’s voice surfaced without effort. “Don’t dig too deep, Abraham.” He had already gone past that point.

Earlier, under an alias, he had posted a short piece linking the shooter’s manifesto to something he could not fully justify yet. What stayed with him was not really the content but the tone. It sounded careful. As if it had been shaped to pass without drawing attention, yet still settle where it needed to.

He had heard something like that tone before. Not exactly the same, but close enough that it did not feel new. Different situation and different name, yet something about it stayed with people longer than it should have.

While he was examining the slow-motion footage he had downloaded from the dark web, Tiger and Marbles jumped down from the sofa behind him and landed on the desk, one on each side of the screen. Their bodies lowered with shoulders tense and eyes fixed on something he could not see. A low uneasy noise started building in their throats, not loud but enough to cut through the room.

Abraham turned slightly, watching them for a second before looking back at the screen. Something about it felt familiar, even though it took him a moment to understand why. About half an hour earlier while he had been in the kitchen making coffee they had reacted in almost the same way sudden and sharp as if something had passed through the room and unsettled them without warning. He had glanced in, seen nothing, and let it go.

Now, without thinking too much about it, he checked the time on the footage. It lined up more closely than he expected.

He did not react immediately. Instead he turned to the second monitor that he left running at all times. The program continued to scan in the background, pulling from news feeds, fragments of conversation, dark-web traffic, and the Schumann background field, always watching for any spike that drifted away from the normal 7.83 Hz. The event log was still open, a single alert marked the same minute. He looked at it for a while without opening the details.

On the main screen the paused frame held its position. He had seen different versions of this before. The structure stayed consistent enough that it no longer felt accidental.

He muted the video and let the room settle again, the rain returning to the foreground. After a while he stood and crossed to the piano against the wall. He sat down without looking back at the screens. For a few seconds he didn’t play.

“Leo,” he said quietly, more to the room than to himself, “I kept digging anyway.”

His hands moved slowly at first, then finding the shape of the melody. Round Midnight drifted through the apartment, low and steady. Tiger and Marbles settled near him. Their eyes caught the dim light in a way that still felt strange.

He did not need to go back to the footage. Whatever this was, it did not happen once. It returned each time slightly altered but never completely different. That was what unsettled him the most.

Round Midnight will be available as a free download on Amazon from May 2 to May 4. No rush. Just something I want to share.

Thank you for reading, as always. See you in the next resonance.
